Irish Walk 2016

O'Sullivan March

all seasons in one day

IMG_3868.jpgToday is the start of the preparation for a walk of 500 klms from Leitrim in the North to Castletownbere in the South of Ireland, the O'Sullivan March. My Great Grandmother was an O'Sullivan so this walk is a little personal but hoping on some help and plenty of advice during this journey and the preparations. This walk will be for Cancer in memory of my two brothers Lloyd and Kerry so will become very personal as I progress and as the time gets closer. Already I am asking the very important question - can I do it or am I completely crazy, only time will tell.

This walk will take me over some very interesting yet very beautiful country and probably at times very wet and cold. I hope to complete this walk in June/July 2016 and hopefully over 5 weeks. I have already purchased a small camera and a backpack so the start of my item list. Photography is important to me.

I have started the "what I need to purchase" list and have checked out the tracks/walks but would love to hear from anyone who has walked this March or any of the walks that are part of the 500 klms. The more I look the more confused I become.

Do I book accommodation along the way before I leave Australia or find it as I go? I must remember that it will be the high tourist season. I have never done it this way before as I like to know where I will be each night but perhaps time to change my way of thinking. This is hard as I am over 60 so not into backpacking and roughing it. Never have been, I prefer my creature comforts at night.

I have purchased a backpack so looks like I will carry as I go, something I have never done before but guess again I have to change my ideas on what I feel is important to carry in the way of clothes - definitely not a tent etc.

I will try and add to this entry as my preparations progress so any help or advice would be appreciated. Nearly forgot - I start my walking training in 10 days so then I know it is real. No use just talking about it. I will start the fundraising for Cancer in early 2015.

Even though my walk is a way off it is starting to come together. I start my serious walking training next week, an hour each morning to start.

by Rianda

I started my walking, just 45 minutes in the morning and my aches and pains tell me that I need a lot more minutes walking.

I am about to purchase my next big purchase for the trip to keep the blog entries coming. Yes, a tablet. The more I look the more confused I become so guess I will do what I usually do and just go out and buy one. Am looking at a HP tablet and then this gives me lots of time to get use to it. I know this sounds strange to some people but hey, I am not one of the young generation who had use them in their sleep.

by Rianda

I have done it, purchased a HP Tablet today and now I just have to figure out how to use it. Interesting days ahead.

A bit too wet to walk at present.

by Rianda

I headed to McDonalds this afternoon to try out the free WiFi that everyone talks about, much easier than I expected. Looks like more coffees coming up.

by Rianda

Have just spent a couple of hours with a friend trying to set up the tablet, gives me 15 months to really learn everything about it. I am getting more confident with it.
Increased the morning walk to 60 minutes this morning and very pleased with the distance I managed.

Did a much longer walk in Canberra over the weekend and felt OK after I had finished- abt 10 klms this time - so pleased. No extra aches next day. Over the next few weeks I am going to start working out the dates for the 2016 walk and distances to walk each day so it is starting to look real. Heaps of support being offered from Ireland.

The first fundraiser will be a raffle of a basket of nutrimetics/easter eggs. Tickets will be $1 each and a Cancer receipt will be issued if required. Please contact me if you would like to be the winner of this lovely basket of goodies.

Very wet in Brisbane this morning due to Cyclone Marcia so no walking. Day of rest.
I have had a couple of companies come on board with me with the fundraising. More news about these companies at a later stage but a lovely surprise.

My walking has been stepped up a degree this week with a few hills included, still walking about 50 minutes before I start work. A few aches but guess this will improve after a few days. Had to invest in some new sneakers but want to leave the books until later in the year. The fundraising is doing well and have over $300 donated on the Cancer page so all is going to plan. Don't forget to visit the Cancer site.

The complete walk stretches from Leitrim in the North to Castletownbere in the South. I will start on 25th June 2016 at the remains of the O'Rourke Castle in the village of Leitrim and finish the walk on 25th July 2016. Keep watching this space for more updates.

I have just gone through my last pair of sneakers, must admit they were on their last legs but I am still not ready to purchase the good shoes that will see me through Ireland. Back to a Target pair of sneakers for a few more months.
Am to have my eyes fixed this week with the first day surgery and then a further day for the second eye later this month. One more thing out of the way and time to do away with the glasses which I have had for about 45 years. A new me going on this trek.

by Rianda

It is all starting to come together. I have set the starting date and know where I will be staying for the first 5 nights. Working on the next section. Ireland here I come!!

by Rianda

First eye done and no glasses at present. Second eye in a few weeks. Another thing out of the way

by Rianda

My first Cancer Fundraiser to start this week, an Easter raffle, mainly for staff and friends at work. On 28th May I will host an afternoon High Tea so this will take a little more organising but guess I will manage.

1st week walking and night stops:

Leitrim - Highwood - Ballinafad - Monasteraden - Frenchpark and then a days rest.

I am currently working on the 2nd week

I have shopped around for the past few months and today purchased the shoes for the hike. This will give me 14months to wear them in. This was the last of the big purchases for the trip so pleased. I have chosen Salomon X Ultra GTX Hiking boots with some ankle support/I will tell you in a few months time if I am happy with them. I started walking 5 klms on 5 mornings a week and have the weekend off. When it gets a little cooler I will increase the morning distance again. Happy with my progress to date. The Cancer fundraising is also very encouraging.

2nd week walking:

Frenchpark - Ballinlough - Glinsk - Ballygar - Kilconnell - Laurencetown - Portumna and then a days rest.

I am currently working on the accommodation.

by Rianda

Have been wearing the new shoes and rather comfortable. Also have had both eyes fixed so ready to go.

by Rianda

Second eye done so now the sight should be perfect for the walk. No glasses so one less thing to carry/wear.

by Rianda

The Cancer Donation page has nearly reached $1000 so thank you to everyone who has helped me reach this stage.
I have been walking in the new boots this week and have managed several blisters - better I get them now and not in 2016.
Have increased the distance on the morning walk to 7 klms for 3 mornings a week. The weather is much nicer for walking.

by Rianda

I am well into the fundraising for the Cancer Foundation with over $1000 in the account but still have a way to go. Still have 14 months to go. The walking distance is increasing and up to about 5 klms most mornings except the weekend when I give the boots and feet a rest. Must admit I sleep well at night. I would like to thank in advance all the help and support I am have been given so far from Australia and Ireland. Check out the Cancer site that I have set up and please come on board and help me reach my target.

I now have over $1600 in the Cancer donation site - very pleased. I may have company with a family member walking with me through Ireland. I am now walking 7 klms a few mornings a week and the walking is getting easier

by Rianda

Just over 12 months before I leave, my sister Susan is also walking with me so I will have company. The walk has been set and it is just on 5 weeks to walk the 500klms. I am still only walking 4 mornings most weeks - 5/7klms most mornings and no big problems so far. My Cancer fundraising has reached the half way mark with about $2800 in the account so very pleased. Will now ease off the fundraising for a few weeks and concentrate on the walking. I am starting to look forward to the walk and I really need to look at what I need to carry or what I can leave at home. Keep watching this space......

by Rianda

The walking has gone up a notch and it will be 12 klms tomorrow so looking forward to the extra time walking, it is a lovely time of the day. My sister Susan is now walking with me in 2016 so great company. The Cancer fundraising has now reached the half way mark after a very successful Cancer High Tea last week. Thank you to everyone who freely gave their time to help me. I have been working on the accommodation and it is all starting to come together.

by Rianda

Only 9 months to go and still so much to do. The walk dates has been set and I am currently search for accommodation. I have started to walk 24klm walks every 2nd weekend and my toes do not like it but guess they have to get use to the idea. The fundraising has now reached $3900 so very pleased. Keep watching this space.

by Rianda

We are now only 5 months out, flights are booked, accommodation is sorted, training has gone up a notch and we are now ready to walk. The fundraising is now up to $4200 so we will make the promised amount and more before we leave.
